ASEAN countries vow to introduce new visa system for citizens from foreign states

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries vowed to introduce one visa regime for citizens from countries outside ASEAN by 2015.

“It will however take special effort to be able to issue an ASEAN visa because visa regime in each country is different,” Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa was quoted by the ANTARA Indonesian news agency.

The announcement was made during the ongoing 18th ASEAN summit in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The new visa system will allow a citizen from a country outside ASEAN come to all ASEAN member countries with one visa, the same way it works with a Schengen visa in the European Union.

  • Asean’s idea is a great one that recognizes how popular it is to travel throughout Southeast Asia. I don’t want to get discouraged yet by thinking that it won’t work, or that countries will be uncooperative. Hopefully, all of the Asean countries will see how this will benefit their economy and reputation as tourist destinations. Most travelers to Southeast Asia plan to visit more than one country but end up canceling a leg of their trip because of visa requirements and waiting to collect visas. I went to Bangkok two years ago and almost had an overstayed visa in Thailand while waiting for a tourist visa for Myanmar. Backpackers tend to make a circuit in Southeast Asia, which includes Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos; a single visa would make it so easy! I foresee certain countries having a problem with the regional visa, but I am hoping that it happens soon!
